A few months after that,\u00a0 various newspapers and media outlets will publicize the standardized test scores of schools.\u00a0 Why are some school&#8217;s test scores not as high as their counterparts?\u00a0 \u00a0Why are some of those students underachieving?\u00a0 One of those reasons is psychosocial factors. Psychosocial factors are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theedadvocate.org\/when-do-children-show-evidence-of-self-esteem-earlier-than-you-might-think\/\">self-esteem<\/a>, intellectual hegemony, and low social views, and low <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edweek.org\/ew\/articles\/2006\/10\/18\/08race.h26.html\">racial identity<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Some minority students believe those students who do well are either <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theedadvocate.org\/oakland-district-reaches-out-to-black-boys-in-crisis\/\">\u201cselling out\u201d<\/a> or acting like another race.\u00a0 Some students also attribute educational success to luck or the task being easy.\u00a0 When it comes to education, minority students must choose between achievement and affiliation.\u00a0 Noted theorist, Abraham Maslow developed his hierarchy of needs, which states that the need to belong outweighs achievement\/wisdom.\u00a0 According to Maslow\u2019s hierarchy of needs, if a student has a conflict between the need affiliation and achievement, the student will always choose affiliation if the need to need has not been met.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The following are just a few questions that each group should ask when it comes to the attitude of themselves, their child or student toward academic achievement:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Students<\/p>\n<p>q\u00a0 Do my friends have poor achievement motivation?<\/p>\n<p>q\u00a0 Do I need to be accepted by my peers?<\/p>\n<p>q\u00a0 Do I lack the need to participate in extracurricular activities?<\/p>\n<p>q\u00a0 Do I live in an area with environmental risk factors such as low-income housing, crime, or community disorganization?<\/p>\n<p>q\u00a0 Am I constantly unmotivated to do well in school?<\/p>\n<p>q\u00a0 Do I have low self-esteem?<\/p>\n<p>q\u00a0 Do I have a negative attitude towards school?<\/p>\n<p>q\u00a0 Do I feel intellectually inferior to students of other ethnicities?<\/p>\n<p>q\u00a0 Do I put forth little to no effort on tests, standardized and otherwise?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Parents<\/p>\n<p>q\u00a0 Is my educational level low?<\/p>\n<p>q\u00a0 Are there lots of dropouts in my family?<\/p>\n<p>q\u00a0 Do I have low academic expectations for my child(ren)?<\/p>\n<p>q\u00a0 Is my socioeconomic status low?<\/p>\n<p>q\u00a0 Do I have communication problems with my child(ren)?<\/p>\n<p>q\u00a0 Do I supervise my children effectively?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>School Personnel<\/p>\n<p>q\u00a0 Do I have low expectations for my students?<\/p>\n<p>q\u00a0 Do I cater to students based their race?<\/p>\n<p>q\u00a0 Do I use an angry tone when speaking to my students?<\/p>\n<p>q\u00a0 Does my teaching staff have low morale?<\/p>\n<p>q\u00a0 Is my school culture and climate unfriendly or hostile?<\/p>\n<p>q\u00a0 Does my staff lack training in multicultural education?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Across America, Teachers and administrators are getting ready for state test and end of course exams.
